4 questions- MASSIA

Writer: Eesti LoomeresidentuuridEesti Loomeresidentuurid

MASSIA is a residency space run by artists and based on self-organizing principles, located in the former school building of Massiaru village in Pärnu County.

Vaim Sarv, an artist and part of the larger Massia collective, answered the questions of LOORE. It is important to remember that his answers reflect his personal relationship with Massia and do not represent the thoughts of the other co-organizers.

1. Why do you do the residency?

I do the residency literally for the sake of freedom. I am interested in creating spaces where people can gather, be together, and engage in community-based creativity outside the structures of today’s market economy, which dominate the Estonian art and cultural landscape. It is hard to resist these capitalist and individualism-promoting norms alone, but together it is a little easier to explore and undermine them. I am convinced that we need such spaces, and therefore I contribute my energy to the Massia residency. On the other hand, I am connected to Massia because it has allowed me to form a deep bond with the land and the surrounding nature. As an immigrant to Estonia, it has been especially valuable to create this connection with my ancestors' land alongside others who share a similar international life path as mine.

2. The most important thing one should know about the Massia residency?

Massia is an informal and self-organizing residency. This means that anyone who wants to stay with us is welcome, but under one condition: they must contribute one hour of their time every day to the maintenance and management of Massia. Everyone is somehow afraid to do this!

3. Why are you members of Loore?

Because working together and sharing resources helps all of us cope better in the world we live in.

4. What will Massia be like in 15 years?

Quite similar to now, but the building will be in much better condition. The sewage system will be fully updated and connected to the local network. Drainage will prevent rainwater and groundwater from leaking into the basement. The building will be insulated, and we will have a new heating system. All spaces will be restored to more or less the condition they were in when the building was constructed in 1938. Our sauna, which will be completed in 2025, will by then be an important part of the Massia experience for visitors. In short, the building’s durability will be ensured, and Massia will continue to be used for freedom and community.
